Amazing how they got all those jockeys here. The world and communications were a lot further apart then than now. Was fantastic organisation to get them all. Somebody did a great job. Could racing here have been any better ? Don't think so. Must have have been a forward thinking committee.

Doesn't have to be a forward thinking committee Riders.

You need a Committee with drive and passion, that will go above and beyond to make racing a better experience. From there you continually improve on what is and isn't a success. You need to be courageous and make decisions that are for the betterment of that club. Not what is for the good, of a select few.

You don't need a committee that is there for Pats on the back, a free ride or for their own benefit. You also don't need people on your committee that just want the title so they can run around and tell the world that there on Said committee so they feel some worth in there life.

This goes for all clubs, not just race clubs. Back in the day, I feel Committees had drive and passion about there clubs. Nowadays I think people only sign up for the title.

herein lies the problem for a lot of clubs around the country. There are a lot of people only on committee for there own benefit .

The VATC had the Invitation Stakes (now the Rupert Clarke Stakes) it was an invitation race that hosted international jockeys, it was first run in 1951 and continued on until 1974.
The SAJC also had an invitation race.

I also have the Invitation Stakes on my blog

Doesn't time fly. Back in the 65 cup I was lucky enough to strap Fairs Print. He was a lovely animal but had dreadfull legs that prevented him going east. Was ridden by a top rider in Peter O'loghlen who wasted hard to ride at 7 stone 10 and was a mess after the race. He led most of the way and when O'oghlen gave him a breather down the back Glen Davies went to the lead and commented to O'loghlen that he would wait for him in the saddling paddock only to be passed again to run second. Abo promised me a sling which I are still waiting for but as usual Peter O'loghlen came to the for and looked after me well.

    Thanks again Piston,
Is it correct that Rendition's colours (P. Watson) were white, blue checks, white sleeves & cap?

Same colors worn by Belinda's Star very handy sprinter

Think the jockeys rode in the flag colours of there country of origin thereby confusing race callers and punters a bit. Was foreign at the time for horses to be carrying the new colours with jockeys racing out of their normal silks. Saddlecloth numbers were a lot smaller then too.

My Old man tells me when I discussed this with him, the "Kingston Town can"t win caller" (cannot remember his name) totally **** the call in the International race, Max Simmonds got it spot on. Thats his recollection, too far back for me

Bill Collins was the culprit who declared "Kingston Town Can't win".

No horse has ever completed the Perth Cup / Melbourne Cup in the same year, however Rogan Josh is the only horse to come closest.

Rogan Josh finished 2nd in the 1999 Perth Cup, beaten by 0.2 lengths, the winner was King Of Saxony who won first-up after a spell.

Bart Cummings was on course that day at Ascot for the Perth Cup, he was visiting his old mate J.J Miller (King Of Saxony's trainer) who rode Bart's 1966 Melbourne Cup winner - Galilee.

Bart was impressed with Rogan Josh's effort in the Perth Cup and later on when owner Wendy Green asked Bart to train the horse he remembered that effort in the Perth Cup and decided to train the horse for a tilt at the 1999 spring carnival with the main target being the Melbourne Cup. The rest as they say is history.

My Dad won on Yabaroo the meeting before the Cup and wanted to ride it in the cup, but he was booked to ride Rexaldo who he rode in the Railway the same day, asked Jim Zinnecker could he get off Rexaldo and he said sure but it will cost you 500 quid. Yabaroo won, the Old Man couldnt complain because he took the booking, just one of those things

Khora Ribbon was owned by The Jarvis Family, huge chestnut but shocking legs. Dave Clark trained it, Jarvis bought 2 yearlings the year he bought Crafty Zam being the other.

Most Rewarding was owned by Tom Rieusset the vet, pretty sure Alan Noble originally started off with the horse but he ended up with Alan Hawke I think. White Black armbands, Black Cap

Piston, any information on England's Dust's colours? He was owned in partnership by his trainer A. Boyden with G Atkinson so would no doubt raced in his owner/trainer's colours.

The above shot of G.Donnelly comforting Khora Ribbon is moving . If I remember correctly there was a massive blow up just after this , after the horse was euthanized the bloke proceeded to butcher it up behind the semaphore board on the inside of the track. Unbeknown to him it was in sight of the members deck

Wow indeed. Could you imagine if that happened now? Racing would be stopped in its tracks effective immediately!

Great photos by the way as well

Remember an english exam...on the exam paper were different photos of situations...could be anything...any type of photo at all..all with no story just the various photos , and you had to select a photo and write your story on it...lo and behold one of the photos was the above 'Khora Ribbon' tragedy.
